City’s Climate Action Projects Get a Boost from Grants
Rockville is making strides in its Climate Action Plan, having recently secured multiple grants to support various sustainability initiatives. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Transportation Planning Board has approved $371,000 for the installation of up to four bikeshare stations in the Twinbrook area, alongside $324,000 designated for electric vehicle charging stations. These funds are derived from the $1 trillion federal infrastructure legislation enacted in 2021, which encourages cities to adopt greener transportation solutions. Additionally, a $134,000 grant from the U. S.
Department of Energy will facilitate solar panel installations at the Lincoln Park Community Center and the transition to electric landscaping equipment. The Maryland Energy Administration has also awarded Rockville a total of $130,000 for converting streetlights to LED technology, along with funding for EV charging ports and LED upgrades at community facilities. Collectively, these grants will enhance access to sustainable transportation and energy solutions for residents, particularly those without home charging options. As Rockville continues to implement these projects, it demonstrates a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.
