Regional Drought Watch Issued
Rockville, Maryland, is calling on its residents and businesses to conserve water as the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has issued a regional drought watch. This announcement highlights the unusually dry conditions affecting nearly six million people in the metropolitan area. Although the supply from the Potomac River and backup reservoirs is currently adequate, officials stress the need for voluntary water conservation to prevent future restrictions. Over the past two months, the region has witnessed record-high temperatures and significant decreases in both streamflow and groundwater levels. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has reported that 95% of the Potomac River Basin is experiencing abnormal to extreme drought conditions.
As a proactive measure, the City’s Public Works Department plans to integrate water conservation practices into its operations. Residents can contribute by adopting simple habits like reducing shower times and fixing leaks. Detailed conservation tips can be found on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' website.
