Renton’s Sunset Gardens Wins Twelfth Governor’s Smart Communities Award

Renton, WALocal News

The City of Renton recently celebrated a significant achievement by receiving its twelfth Governor's Smart Communities Award for the Sunset Gardens apartments. Announced on August 12, 2024, this award highlights the city’s innovative efforts in public housing development. Sunset Gardens consists of 76 affordable housing units designated for veterans, seniors, and persons with disabilities who earn less than 50% of the area's median income. The project, completed in April 2024, was made possible through a successful partnership involving the Renton Housing Authority, the City of Renton, and several financial institutions. It is also notable for being the first project funded under House Bill 1590, which allows local jurisdictions to utilize sales tax revenue for affordable housing initiatives.

Over the past 15 years, Renton has invested over $150 million in revitalizing the Sunset Area through various community projects, including parks and infrastructure improvements. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for later this year to mark the official opening of Sunset Gardens. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to fostering a thriving, sustainable community.
