The newly constructed Redmond Senior & Community Center has garnered the first-ever LEED recognition from the U. S. Green Building Council for its use of climate-resilient wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. This recognition not only emphasizes the importance of sustainable building practices but also showcases the collaboration between Opsis Architecture and Sustainable NW. Mayor Angela Birney expressed her excitement about the center's design, highlighting its commitment to both community and environmental impact.
In addition to utilizing sustainably sourced wood, the center features energy-efficient windows and advanced mechanical and plumbing systems, along with rooftop solar panels that are expected to supply up to 50% of the building’s electricity. Looking ahead, Redmond's comprehensive plan, known as Redmond 2050, is set to enhance the Green Building Incentive Program to promote mass timber construction, including buildings up to 12 stories. The City recently organized a workshop to engage property owners, community members, and developers in discussions about these upcoming changes. Grand opening celebrations for the center are scheduled for May 3 and 4, with community access starting May 6. For more details, residents are encouraged to visit the City’s official website.
