During the ninth annual Affordable Housing Week, the City of Redmond received the prestigious Community Champion Award from the Housing Development Consortium (HDC) for its outstanding leadership in promoting affordable housing and racial equity. Mayor Angela Birney accepted the award on May 13 at Seattle City Hall, emphasizing the city's commitment to increasing housing variety and affordability for all income levels. This recognition is a testament to Redmond's ongoing efforts to create inclusive housing solutions that meet the needs of its diverse community. The city adopted its first Housing Action Plan in early 2021, which serves as a roadmap for enhancing the supply of affordable housing through strategic land use regulations and partnerships. Redmond aims to plan for an additional 20,000 new housing units by 2044 as part of its collaboration with King County to address regional population growth.

The Housing Development Consortium's mission is to support and advocate for affordable housing across the region. Mayor Birney's statement highlighted the importance of collective efforts in achieving affordable housing goals.
