The Redmond Police Department has recently launched the "Take Me Home" program, a voluntary initiative aimed at enhancing safety for individuals with cognitive or developmental disabilities. This program provides a registry database that families can use to register their loved ones, ensuring that they receive appropriate assistance in emergencies. It is specifically designed for individuals with autism, Down syndrome, dementia, and other cognitive impairments who may struggle to communicate or identify themselves. Families can register their loved ones with essential information including a digital picture, demographic details, and emergency contacts. This information is securely stored in a database maintained by the police department.
In the event that a registered individual goes missing or is found alone, officers can access this database to provide timely assistance and connect them with their caregivers. Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe emphasized that the goal of the program is to minimize trauma during emergency situations and facilitate quick reunification. Additional information and registration can be accessed through the Redmond Police Department's Community Engagement Unit.
