The Redmond Police Department has renewed its Certified Autism Center™ designation, furthering its commitment to inclusivity within the community. This certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), underscores the department's efforts to train officers in assisting autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. Initially certified in 2022, the renewal reflects the ongoing dedication of the department to improve interactions with vulnerable community members. Police Chief Darrell Lowe highlighted the importance of this training in ensuring compassionate service. Additionally, the department has launched a "Take Me Home" program aimed at helping families with cognitive or developmental disabilities in case of emergencies or if individuals go missing.
This program allows for the registration of vulnerable individuals, ensuring that first responders can effectively reunite them with their caregivers. The initiative is designed to minimize trauma during emergencies and enhance community safety. Myron Pincomb, chairman of IBCCES, praised the renewal, indicating the positive impact it has on the community and encouraging other organizations to follow suit.
