COCC Introduces Sheep for Sustainable Weed Management
Central Oregon Community College (COCC) initiated an innovative approach to weed management by bringing in over 60 Dorper Ewe sheep on September 1. These sheep, provided by Martin Ranch, are tasked with clearing weeds across 3. 19 acres of the campus, and they will remain for seven to ten days based on their progress. The initiative represents a partnership involving ranch owner Scott Martin, COCC's Sustainability Coordinator Noelle Copley, and United Agrivoltaics, reflecting a commitment to sustainable practices. This method not only reduces the need for chemical herbicides but also aligns with the college's goals for environmental stewardship and climate change mitigation.
The use of sheep for land management is a growing trend in sustainable agriculture, demonstrating a shift towards eco-friendly solutions. COCC's project highlights the importance of integrating livestock into land management strategies, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing the natural environment. This initiative showcases how educational institutions can lead in sustainable practices that serve both the community and the environment. As COCC continues to develop its sustainability initiatives, projects like this could serve as a model for other institutions looking to reduce their ecological impact.
