Extremely rare dedication honors Puyallup WWII soldier awarded the Medal of Honor
Puyallup City Hall hosted a heartfelt dedication ceremony to honor Lt. Victor Leonard Kandle, a World War II soldier recognized posthumously with the Medal of Honor for his valor in combat. The lobby outside the City Council chambers has been renamed in his memory, a significant gesture underscored by Mayor Jim Kastama’s remarks on its rarity. Kandle’s bravery during a crucial battle in France on October 9, 1944, led to numerous enemy casualties and the capture of strategic positions. His family and local veterans attended the event, celebrating his legacy and the community's commitment to remembering its heroes.
Retired Lt. Col. Jack Taylor, instrumental in proposing the renaming, highlighted the importance of recognizing Kandle’s sacrifices for future generations. The unveiling of a restored plaque marked a key moment in the ceremony, with Terry Kandle expressing gratitude for the efforts made to honor his father. This dedication emphasizes the profound impact of local heroes on the community’s identity and values.
The event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime and the importance of honoring those who serve.
