Ice Meteor Falls in Junnar, Sparking Curiosity Among Villagers - PUNE PULSE
On September 23, 2024, Domewadi, a village near Otur in Junnar Taluka, experienced an extraordinary event when a large ice chunk, likely a megacryometeor, fell from the sky. The ice ball, estimated to weigh between 30 to 40 kilograms, crashed into a soybean field owned by local farmer Babaji Wajge, creating a significant impact crater. Field workers were the first to notice the unusual sight, which quickly attracted the attention of local children eager to collect pieces of the ice for play. As news spread, a crowd of curious villagers gathered to witness the remnants of the ice chunk. Local authorities, including Revenue Officer Vijay Phalke and Talathi Atul Vibhute, were notified and arrived on the scene by 2:30 PM, but unfortunately, the ice had already melted, leaving only a small puddle behind.
Megacryometeors, while rare, have been documented globally and typically form under unusual atmospheric conditions. This incident not only sparked excitement and curiosity within the local community but also raised questions about the atmospheric phenomena that lead to such occurrences. The event serves as a reminder of nature's unpredictability and the ongoing need for scientific inquiry into these rare events.
