Memorial in Olympia for firefighters in the works with bill passage
A bill to reconstruct a memorial for fallen firefighters in Washington State is currently awaiting the signature of Governor Jay Inslee, aiming to pay tribute to nearly 300 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1891. The bill's passage was celebrated by supporters, including lawmakers who are firefighters themselves, in a gathering in Olympia. Hilary Franz, Washington's Commissioner of Public Lands, expressed that the new memorial would provide a meaningful space for reflection and honor the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. Senator Kevin Van De Wege, a firefighter and sponsor of the bill, noted the personal significance of inscribing names on the memorial, particularly that of his friend Chad Cate. Kalina Shouse, a fire commissioner's widow, shared that the memorial serves as a way for families to grieve and remember their loved ones publicly.
The original memorial was lost in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, making the reconstruction effort all the more significant. Lawmakers stressed the ongoing health risks firefighters face, including cancer, reinforcing the need for continued support. Decisions regarding the memorial's design are anticipated to be made within the year, showcasing a commitment to honoring those who have served.
