City announces name and structure for Portland’s new permitting bureau

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland has introduced the Portland Permitting & Development bureau, set to begin operations on July 1, to simplify the permitting process for various development projects. This significant restructuring brings together approximately 350 professionals from five different city bureaus, including the Bureau of Development Services, Parks & Recreation, Transportation, Water, and Environmental Services. City Commissioner Carmen Rubio highlighted the initiative's goal of enhancing customer service and providing a clear path for residents and businesses seeking permits. The project has been in development since August, following a unanimous vote from the Portland City Council to unify permitting processes. Community engagement was a key element in the naming and structuring of the new bureau, which will feature nine specialized teams, including one dedicated to customer support.

Chief Administrative Officer Michael Jordan stated that this effort exemplifies Portland's commitment to effective and efficient government. The City Council is expected to vote on the proposed reorganization on May 22. As the city prepares for its first ranked-choice election in November, the establishment of this bureau marks a progressive step in modernizing Portland's permitting framework.
