Portland teen develops app connecting those who are homeless with resources

Portland, ORLocal News

In a commendable effort to support the homeless community, Portland teen Claire Cao has launched the Shelter Bridge app, designed to connect individuals with essential services. The app, which went live in August, allows users to find shelter beds, meals, and legal aid, while also featuring a chatbot for quick answers and navigation assistance. Inspired by her volunteer experiences at Blanchet House, Cao recognized the challenges faced by many in locating available resources. Notably, the app's development came at no cost to taxpayers, a fact that has impressed local service providers. Scott Kerman, executive director of Blanchet House, expressed his admiration for Cao's initiative, stating that it fills a long-standing gap in technological solutions for homeless services.

The app has already seen expansion into other states, highlighting its broader potential impact. Local shelters can now register with the app, with hopes of offering real-time updates on shelter bed availability. This innovative approach leverages technology to provide dignified and supportive solutions for those in need.
