Portland firefighters recall harrowing rescue of woman from burning car

Portland, ORLocal News

On December 23, a serious incident occurred in Southeast Portland when a 47-year-old woman crashed her car into a tree, causing a fire to engulf the vehicle. First responders from Portland Fire and Rescue and the Portland Police Bureau arrived quickly and found the woman unconscious but with a pulse. Captain Shane Furrer noted the hazardous conditions due to rain and fog, making the rescue particularly challenging. The crew, despite being newly formed, worked effectively to break windows and extricate her from the burning car. Medical personnel provided immediate care, including CPR and intubation, after her rescue.

The woman has been cited for DUII and reckless driving and is currently recovering in a burn unit with injuries primarily to her legs. This incident serves as a crucial reminder for the community to prioritize safe transportation and avoid impaired driving, especially as New Year's celebrations approach.
