How an Arizona recycling plant is working to keep old solar panels out of landfills
In Yuma, Arizona, We Recycle Solar is pioneering efforts to manage the disposal of old solar panels, a growing concern as the U. S. sees an increase in solar energy production. CEO Adam Saghei states that although solar energy does not generate air pollution, the waste from aging panels can lead to significant environmental hazards if not handled properly. The facility's operations reveal that solar panels are predominantly made of glass, which is highly recyclable, but also contain hazardous metals and plastics.
Currently, only about 10% of discarded panels are recycled, leaving a staggering 90% to end up in landfills. Saghei emphasizes that around 60% of the panels received can still be reused, refurbished, and sold, often in international markets. The facility also accepts surplus products from projects that are overstocked, contributing to waste reduction. The overarching mission of We Recycle Solar is to embody the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle within the renewable energy sector. This initiative not only addresses local waste management issues but also sets a precedent for sustainable practices in the industry.
