Christmas Tree Recycling Sites Open December 24
Omaha will open its Christmas tree recycling sites on December 24, allowing residents to drop off their trees until January 9, 2024. Volunteers and city staff will be present at select locations to assist during specific days. Residents are encouraged to ensure their trees are free from ornaments and other materials before recycling. In a positive financial development, the City of Omaha is projecting an $8 million budget surplus for 2023, attributed to an increase in sales tax revenue. This surplus is expected to support various initiatives, including a $3 million contribution to the Mental Health Innovation Foundation and $20 million in capital investments across departments.
Mayor Jean Stothert emphasized the importance of careful expense management, which has consistently resulted in year-end carryovers. Finance Director Steve Curtiss highlighted that the rise in local sales tax revenue aligns with national consumer spending trends, despite ongoing inflation. The city’s financial health appears robust, enabling it to fulfill obligations while maintaining a surplus.
