Building Permit Fees Waived for Tornado-Damaged Properties
Following the tornado that struck Omaha on April 26, the City Council has taken decisive action by waiving building permit fees for property owners looking to rebuild. The unanimous vote allows this waiver to apply to properties within the city limits and the surrounding three-mile zoning jurisdiction. Councilmember Brinker Harding highlighted the city’s limited capabilities in disaster response, but noted that waiving these fees represents a critical support mechanism for affected residents. Douglas County has recorded over 834 instances of property damage, prompting swift inspections of more than 1,900 properties. This data will help identify those eligible for the fee waiver.
Omaha's Superintendent for Permits and Inspections, Anna Bespoyasny, reminded residents that while permit fees are waived, contractors must still possess the necessary licenses to operate within the city or its jurisdiction. The decision is seen as vital for aiding recovery efforts and ensuring a swift rebuilding process. The overall response to the tornado has been lauded, particularly for the lack of fatalities, attributed to effective early warnings and community preparedness.
