Lacey City Council Reconsiders Metropolitan Parks District Proposal
The Lacey City Council is reconsidering the establishment of a Metropolitan Parks District, an initiative previously rejected by voters in 2018. A recommendation from the Parks Improvement Funding Workgroup suggests a property tax levy of 45 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, which could raise around $5. 9 million annually to improve local parks. For context, a homeowner with a $500,000 assessment would pay about $225 per year, or roughly $18. 75 monthly.
While several council members, including Michael Steadman, support the benefits of investing in parks for community health and economic growth, others, like Lenny Greenstein, are cautious and seek clarity on budget allocations and funding sources. Greenstein emphasizes the need to understand how the funds would be used, particularly regarding the Regional Athletic Complex. Additionally, concerns about proposing multiple tax measures in consecutive years arise, especially in the current economic climate. Mayor Andy Ryder has suggested a gradual implementation, proposing a lower initial rate instead of jumping directly to the full amount. The council is set to discuss this proposal further in a work session scheduled for January 14.
