Locust Cider Closes Seven Taprooms Amid Ongoing Challenges
Locust Cider, a cidermaker headquartered in Gig Harbor, Washington, has announced the closure of seven additional taprooms, including notable locations in Tacoma, Olympia, and Seattle. This decision follows the closure of the Tacoma taproom just weeks prior, reflecting the significant challenges the business has faced in the wake of the pandemic. Owners Jason and Rebecca Spears expressed their sentiments on social media, stating that while this move is necessary for the company's future, it is also deeply painful. They emphasized that despite the scale of their operations changing, their mission to create a gathering place for cider lovers remains intact. The remaining taprooms include locations in Woodinville, Spokane, and two in downtown Seattle.
The founders noted that the rapid expansion of their brand since its launch in 2015 has now encountered unforeseen hurdles due to the pandemic's impact. They are determined to pause and rebuild with a clearer and more sustainable strategy for the future. This development highlights the broader struggles of the hospitality industry in adapting to a post-COVID landscape.
