DES secures $1M grant to build berm for Deschutes Estuary
The Washington State Department of Enterprise Services has successfully secured a $1 million federal grant for the Deschutes Estuary restoration project in Olympia, focusing on enhancing flood resilience. This funding will facilitate the design and permitting of a habitat berm along the shoreline of Heritage Park, which is critical for preventing flooding in the area. Highlighted by Senator Maria Cantwell, this initiative is the largest grant awarded among six coastal resilience projects in Washington, totaling $3. 4 million from the National Coastal Resilience Fund, derived from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. The overall cost of the restoration project is expected to surpass $350 million, indicating its significant scope and importance.
The berm will not only provide flood protection but also restore natural habitats, promoting biodiversity in the region. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2025, with the berm engineered to handle up to 3 feet of sea level rise. Senator Cantwell emphasized that these investments are essential for ensuring coastal communities are equipped to face the challenges posed by climate change.
