15 lifeguards walk off job after change in leadership

Ogunquit, MELocal News

Ogunquit, Maine, is grappling with a lifeguard shortage after a walkout by 15 lifeguards, including many seasoned professionals. This protest was sparked by the removal of J. P. Argenti's captain title, which was transferred to the fire chief, igniting concerns over pay and safety. Argenti highlighted the dangerous situation at the beach, voicing frustration over town officials' dismissal of his requests for better compensation and hours.

Fire Chief Russell Osgood clarified that the leadership change aimed to reduce the number of department heads reporting to the town manager while allowing Argenti to focus more on the beach. Despite the reassurances, the walkout resulted in two lifeguard stands being left unmanned, prompting worries about public safety along Ogunquit Beach. To address this, Osgood plans to adjust lifeguard coverage and restrict swimming areas to prevent accidents. Argenti is now advocating for public support to regain his captaincy through a Change. org petition linked to the 'Save Ogunquit Beach' Facebook page.

The town is simultaneously seeking to hire replacement lifeguards to ensure safety during the peak summer season.
