Grants for cycling, walking paths support sustainability
The British Columbia government is allocating $24 million to support 53 active transportation projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. The funding will facilitate the development of multi-use pathways, protected bike lanes, and pedestrian bridges, significantly improving safety and accessibility. Minister Mike Farnworth stated that this initiative encourages healthier lifestyles while reducing dependency on passenger vehicles. In addition to the active projects, nine communities will receive support for creating future transportation network plans. Since the inception of the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program in 2020, 327 projects have been funded across 187 communities, aligning with the Province's CleanBC commitment.
This funding not only strengthens community connectivity but also improves access to essential services like schools and transit. The program provides cost-sharing investments of up to $500,000 for infrastructure projects and $50,000 for developing network plans. Overall, this initiative reflects the government's commitment to building a more sustainable and health-conscious future for British Columbians.
