Provincial health officers statement on end of respiratory illness season
Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia's provincial health officer, has officially declared the end of the 2024-25 respiratory illness season, an announcement grounded in the latest data from provincial and federal public health partners. The BC Centre for Disease Control reported a significant drop in respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV, with only around 40 individuals currently hospitalized due to COVID-19. This decline in cases is further supported by lower test positivity rates and decreased detection in wastewater samples. As a result, the additional health measures previously implemented in healthcare settings will no longer be required, although certain protocols regarding personal protective equipment remain in effect.
Dr. Henry urged the public to continue practicing healthy habits to prevent the spread of illnesses, such as hand hygiene and staying home when sick. Vaccination remains a critical component of public health, and residents are encouraged to book immunization appointments. This declaration marks a significant milestone in the province's ongoing response to respiratory illnesses. With the end of the respiratory illness season, the focus now shifts to maintaining community health through individual responsibility and public awareness.
