The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) in Merritt is set to enhance its student support services with the construction of a new family housing complex aimed at Indigenous families. This initiative will introduce 12 new townhouses, increasing the total number of student beds on campus to 110, as well as providing crucial childcare services. Anne Kang, Minister of Post-Secondary Education, highlighted the necessity of secure and affordable housing for students pursuing their studies alongside their families. The new facility is designed to open by fall 2027 and will incorporate culturally grounded elements that reflect Indigenous knowledge and community values. The project aligns with the Eagle’s Perch concept, promoting holistic learning and community engagement.

Additionally, the complex will feature an expanded childcare facility with 36 spaces, supporting the development of future early childhood educators. The Province's investment of $19. 6 million underscores its commitment to improving student housing since 2017, which has seen over 10,700 beds created across British Columbia. This project not only benefits NVIT students but also strengthens the ties between education and community wellbeing.
