River debris removal completed in Red Bridge fire cleanup
The completion of debris removal from the South Thompson River marks a pivotal moment in the recovery efforts following the devastating Red Bridge fire in Kamloops. On September 19, 2024, the fire led to the collapse of the bridge, which was essential for connecting Tkʼemlúps te Secwépemc lands to the city. In response, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit has been actively working with local communities and agencies, ensuring a thorough cleanup process. Utilizing advanced techniques like remote-operated vehicles and GPS, divers conducted a final sweep of the riverbed, documenting their progress and ensuring no debris remained. By early March 2025, both river and onshore cleanup efforts were completed, alongside the restoration of Pioneer Park.
With cleanup finalized, the ministry is now focused on developing a long-term transportation plan that prioritizes safety and connectivity for residents. A request for proposals will soon be issued to engage a consultant planning-and-design team. The planning phase is anticipated to commence in spring 2025, promising to enhance regional transportation infrastructure.
