New child care centre will support families in Kamloops
The upcoming child care centre in downtown Kamloops will provide 36 licensed spaces, including 12 for infants and 24 for children aged three to kindergarten, significantly bolstering local child care options. Funded by over $416,000 from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, this initiative reflects a strong partnership between the Province and the City of Kamloops aimed at improving access to affordable child care. Rohini Arora, the parliamentary secretary for child care, praised the tremendous effort that went into realizing this project, emphasizing its importance for local families. Jenna Sudds, the federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, termed the additional spots a "game-changer," highlighting the necessity of affordable child care. The YMCA, involved in the project, is prepared to deliver a safe and nurturing environment for children with its experienced staff and unique curriculum.
Since 2018, the ChildCareBC initiative has successfully funded over 40,000 new licensed child care spaces across British Columbia, with more than half currently operational. This new centre represents a significant step in the Province's ongoing commitment to make quality child care accessible to more families. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of community-driven solutions to address child care challenges.
