A symbol of togetherness Hundreds join Lynnwood menorah lighting ceremony
The Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County's 13th annual Menorah lighting ceremony took place at the Lynnwood City Center light rail station, attracting hundreds of community members to celebrate Hanukkah. The event featured the lighting of a 9-foot menorah and live music from the Seattle-based Klez Katz Klezmer band, creating a festive atmosphere. In addition to traditional activities such as sharing doughnuts, attendees enjoyed unique experiences like face painting and a 'gelt drop' from South County Fire’s ladder truck, where chocolate coins were released for children to collect. Rabbi Berel Paltiel led the lighting and emphasized its symbolism of togetherness and positivity, expressing that these lights have the power to unite people. Mayor Christine Frizzell highlighted the event's inclusivity, with attendees coming from Lynnwood and beyond, showcasing a welcoming community spirit.
Seattle resident Anna Yemets shared her emotional experience at the event, feeling a strong sense of acceptance and support for Jewish pride. The ceremony also marked a significant milestone, celebrating 50 years since the first public Menorah was lit in the U. S. at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Rabbi Paltiel concluded by stating that the turnout exceeded expectations, reinforcing the community's desire for joyful gatherings after challenging times.
