LPD to Implement Encrypted Radio Communications
The Lewisville Police Department (LPD) is implementing a significant upgrade to its public safety communications system by transitioning to encrypted radio channels over the next month. This move is designed to enhance the confidentiality and integrity of police communications, ensuring that sensitive information remains secure and protected from unauthorized access. With the shift to encrypted channels, LPD aims to better safeguard critical operations, emergency responses, and personally identifiable information exchanged during public safety incidents. Consequently, LPD radio communications will no longer be accessible via scanners, internet-enabled websites, or smart device applications. This upgrade is consistent with industry best practices and aligns LPD with many regional law enforcement agencies that operate on encrypted radio systems.
Although the communications will be encrypted, they remain subject to open records requests, allowing for transparency. The process is expected to be fully implemented before October 2024. For inquiries regarding this transition, citizens can reach out to LPD Public Information Officer Rachel Roberts.
