County seeks public input on updated wildfire protection plan

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Chelan County officials have launched a public comment period for an updated Community Wildfire Protection Plan, available for public review until February 28. This updated plan, revising the 2019 document, comes in response to the region's increasing wildfire incidents and their associated impacts. Elle Robinson, a senior natural resource specialist, highlighted the need for local community input to ensure the plan effectively addresses specific risks and assets unique to Chelan County. The draft plan outlines the county's vulnerabilities to wildfire hazards and presents comprehensive strategies for risk mitigation. To aid community engagement, the county has developed interactive tools like a StoryMap feature and hazard mapper, enabling residents to explore risk areas visually.

Public feedback is encouraged through a 10-minute online survey and email submissions, as local voices are vital in shaping the plan. The Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to review the plan for potential adoption in late March, emphasizing the urgency of community involvement in wildfire preparedness. This proactive approach aims to enhance the region's resilience against the growing threat of wildfires.
