Lacey Youth Council Empowering Youth Voices in Local Governance
Established in 2019, the Lacey Youth Council is an essential advisory body that amplifies the youth voice in Lacey, Washington, comprising students from local high schools and home school organizations. The council's members, who are sophomores, juniors, and seniors, engage in various community initiatives and local governance education, meeting bi-monthly to discuss city projects and report back to the city council. Positions within the council include a Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Clerk, as well as representatives for important advisory boards, such as the Commission on Equity and the Library Board. Through events like the Lacey Spring Fun Fair and the Lacey Youth Summit, the council actively participates in community engagement, fostering a sense of responsibility among the youth. The council serves 15 members, with terms lasting one year, allowing up to three consecutive terms for each member.
This structure not only empowers students but also cultivates future community leaders by providing valuable experience in civic duties. Applications for participation open each May, underscoring the council's commitment to inclusivity and youth involvement in local governance. The initiative reflects a progressive approach to integrating young voices into city decision-making processes.
