Town leaders raise concerns over proposed parking legislation
In a recent Town Planning Commission meeting in La Conner, officials voiced apprehensions regarding Senate Bill 5184, which proposes to limit parking mandates for new residential units to half a space per unit. Mayor Marna Hanneman articulated that this "one size fits all" approach may not be appropriate for their community, which lacks extensive public transit options. Planning Commissioner Sommer Holt warned that decreased parking availability could hinder the town's vision for revitalizing the south end, particularly if existing parking lots are repurposed for housing. Assistant Town Planner Ajah Eills acknowledged that if the bill passes, the town will need to reassess its parking codes. The legislation is framed as a pro-housing and environmentally friendly initiative, aiming to reduce development costs and promote walkability.
However, local leaders are concerned that it may overlook the specific needs of La Conner's residents. With a public comment deadline set for February 20, town officials encourage community engagement to ensure their voices are heard. This ongoing discussion highlights the tension between state-level reforms and local governance in the face of changing housing demands.
