The City of Kirkland features three guarded swimming beaches—Houghton Beach, Waverly Beach, and Juanita Beach—offering a safe and enjoyable environment for swimming enthusiasts. Each beach has designated swim areas and provides a free lifejacket loaner program to enhance safety. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, ensuring that rules are enforced and swimmers are monitored. Children aged 12 and under are required to pass a Deep-Water Waterfront Swim Test before they can venture into deeper waters. In the event of inclement weather or air temperatures below 65 degrees, lifeguards will not be present, and signs will indicate their absence.

The city advises groups larger than 15 to contact them 48 hours in advance of their visit to facilitate proper arrangements. The Lifeguard Olympics, an annual training event, is typically held in August, inviting community members to participate and observe. For the latest water quality information, residents can visit King County’s Lake Swimming Beach Data webpage.
