Mayor Agrans Plans to Address Food Nutrition Insecurity
Mayor Larry Agran of Irvine is actively addressing food insecurity by aligning with the National Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger. This past weekend, he participated in a volunteer event at Harvest Solutions Farm, where more than 30,000 pounds of broccoli were harvested for local food banks. Agran underscored the urgency of tackling food insecurity, stating it is a significant concern in both America and Orange County. The initiative at Harvest Solutions Farm is a collaborative effort that combines resources from Second Harvest Food Bank, Solutions for Urban Ag, and the University of California South Coast Research & Extension Center. A.
G. Kawamura, chairman of Solutions for Urban Ag, emphasized the innovative and collaborative nature of urban agriculture initiatives. Produce harvested from the farm is distributed to various organizations, including the UCI Basic Needs Center. Agran aims to enhance the city's commitment to agricultural efforts, suggesting that suitable land in the Great Park could be utilized for farming. He believes that Irvine has the capacity to become a vital food source for all of Orange County.
