Iowa Poll: Most Iowans oppose state's 6-week abortion ban law now in effect
A recent Iowa Poll conducted by the Des Moines Register reveals that a significant majority of Iowans, 59%, oppose the state's six-week abortion ban, which restricts most abortions after embryonic cardiac activity is detected. The poll, conducted from September 8 to 11 with a sample size of 811 Iowans, indicates a rising trend in support for abortion rights, with 64% of respondents advocating for legal abortion in all or most cases. This marks the first public opinion assessment since the law took effect on July 29, 2023, following a ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court allowing its enforcement. Notably, disapproval of the law is particularly high among women, Democrats, and suburban residents, with 69% of women disapproving and 91% of Democrats opposing it. In contrast, the law finds support among certain demographics, including 67% of Republicans and 58% of evangelicals.
The law has replaced Iowa's previous abortion law, which permitted abortions until about 20 weeks. The findings underscore a growing divide in public opinion on reproductive rights in Iowa, particularly in the wake of national changes following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This poll serves as a critical indicator of the evolving attitudes toward abortion in the state.
