Iowa Poll: Most Iowans say it’s ‘critical’ to secure the border
A recent Iowa Poll conducted by Selzer & Co. indicates that a significant majority of Iowans—60%—believe securing the border is “critical” as the presidential election approaches. This poll assessed five immigration-related policies, with border security emerging as the top priority, as only 11% of respondents rated it as unimportant. The poll also highlighted that 43% of Iowans consider protecting “Dreamers” from deportation as critical, while 42% support a pathway to citizenship for immigrants already in the country. Mass deportation of undocumented immigrants is viewed as critical by 40% of those surveyed.
The issue of ending birthright citizenship garners less support, with only 26% considering it critical, showcasing varying concerns among Iowans. Notably, the data reveals pronounced divides along party lines: 90% of Republicans prioritize border security, while Democrats and independents show more mixed views on immigration policies. As the election date of November 5 nears, immigration remains a central theme in the political discourse, particularly as former President Trump critiques the Biden administration's handling of border issues. The Iowa Poll surveyed 811 residents from September 8-11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3. 4 percentage points.
