Two state universities to ask Legislature for no general budget increase
In a recent announcement, the University of Iowa and Iowa State University confirmed they will not pursue additional general education funding for the upcoming fiscal year 2026, a decision documented by the Iowa Board of Regents. Meanwhile, the University of Northern Iowa is planning to request a modest increase of $2. 5 million. If approved, the total funding request for the three universities would reach approximately $506. 3 million.
This decision comes on the heels of a 2. 5% increase in general appropriations for fiscal year 2025, amounting to $12. 3 million. The universities stress that state investment is crucial for maintaining affordable access to four-year degrees for Iowans. By uniting under the motto "service to Iowans," they aim to secure funding for various special programs, including rural health care initiatives and partnerships with community colleges.
The upcoming Regents meeting on September 19 will be critical for determining the fate of these requests. As the landscape of higher education funding continues to evolve, the choices made by these institutions will significantly impact their operations and community engagement.
