Lucas Building near Iowa Capitol evacuated because of suspicious parcel
On Monday morning, the Lucas Building, situated near the Iowa Capitol in Des Moines, was evacuated due to a suspicious parcel located in the Iowa Secretary of State's Office. The Iowa State Patrol was alerted to the situation at approximately 11 a. m. and promptly initiated evacuation protocols for the immediate area. The Des Moines Fire Department's Hazmat Team was dispatched to investigate the parcel thoroughly.
After conducting tests, the team confirmed that the parcel did not pose any threat, allowing employees to return to work. While the situation was resolved without incident, Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol stated that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the parcel is ongoing. The Lucas Building also accommodates multiple state offices, including Health and Human Services and the State Treasurer. This incident highlights the importance of swift emergency response in ensuring public safety.
Fortunately, normal operations resumed quickly following the all-clear from authorities.
