Iowa City, IALocal News

According to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, likely Iowa voters have distinct preferences when evaluating Donald Trump and Kamala Harris on various traits. The poll reveals that Trump is perceived as more adept at keeping America secure, with 58% of respondents favoring him over Harris, who garnered 41%. In contrast, Harris is viewed as more trustworthy, with 47% of voters supporting her in this area compared to Trump's 45%. Additionally, Harris is seen as more capable of unifying the country, with 46% favoring her compared to 39% for Trump. The survey highlights significant partisan divides, as Democrats overwhelmingly support Harris while Republicans favor Trump on all six traits assessed.

Independents, however, display a more mixed response, particularly on issues of trustworthiness and unification. The results suggest a narrowing race in Iowa, with Harris trailing Trump by only 4 percentage points, a significant shift from previous polls. Overall, the findings illustrate the complexities of voter sentiment as the 2024 election approaches.
