Measles alerts issued for western Sydney and Gold Coast
Health authorities have issued measles alerts for Western Sydney and the Gold Coast after a case linked to a traveler from Vietnam was identified. The individual arrived in Sydney on a flight from a region currently experiencing a measles outbreak but was not infectious during the flight. Individuals who visited Family Doctors Berala on January 18 and those who were on Qantas flight QF596 from Sydney to Gold Coast Airport on January 17 are advised to monitor for symptoms. Measles is known for its high contagion rate and can lead to severe health complications. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 10 days post-exposure, but can take as long as 18 days to manifest.
Health officials strongly recommend that the community stays updated on vaccinations to prevent further outbreaks. Dr. Mitchell Smith, Director of Public Health, stressed the importance of ensuring protection against measles, especially for those born after 1965 who need two doses of the vaccine. Vaccination remains the most effective defense against this highly infectious disease, particularly as outbreaks are occurring in various regions globally.
