Breakfast in the Classroom program shines in Federal Way Photos
The Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) program has made significant strides in addressing student hunger in Federal Way Public Schools, earning the "Closing the Hunger Gap" award from the United Way of King County. Initially piloted at Rainier View Elementary, the program has expanded to six additional schools, effectively increasing breakfast participation among students eligible for free and reduced lunch. Prior to BIC, over half of these students would skip breakfast; now, participation aligns with eligibility, effectively closing the hunger gap. The program enhances not only nutrition but also fosters a positive classroom environment, allowing students to enjoy breakfast without the stress of long lines or rushed meals. Teachers have noted a calmer classroom atmosphere and improvements in emotional management among students, with reports of increased feelings of belonging and better teacher-student relationships.
The initiative has also attracted attention from other districts, with Seattle School Board Director Liza Rankin expressing interest in similar implementations. Federal Way's proactive approach sets it apart, showcasing effective leadership in combating student hunger. The collaboration between the school district and organizations like No Kid Hungry has proven essential, underlining the importance of community partnerships in educational initiatives.
