WA residents urged to donate blood due to code red low levels

Federal Way, WALocal News

In response to a severe drop in blood supplies, the Washington Department of Health has declared a “code red” and is urgently urging residents to donate blood. The state has faced four consecutive days of critically low blood levels, particularly impacting the availability of Type O blood and platelets. Contributing factors include recent cold weather and hazardous driving conditions, which have significantly reduced donor turnout. The health department emphasizes that approximately 1,000 donors are required each day to maintain essential blood supplies for transfusions and medical treatments. Notably, each pint of donated blood can potentially save up to three lives, underscoring the importance of community participation in this initiative.

Residents are encouraged to make appointments and can locate nearby donation sites through organizations like the American Red Cross, Bloodworks Northwest, and Vitalant. As the situation remains urgent, the health department hopes to rally support and increase donations to alleviate the ongoing shortages. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to public health and safety, aiming to ensure that blood banks are adequately stocked for those in need.
