Permanent supportive housing to open this year in Federal Way

Federal Way, WALocal News

A new permanent supportive housing project is scheduled to open in Federal Way in February 2025, converting the former Extended Stay America hotel at 1400 S. 320th St. into a supportive shelter for the homeless. King County purchased the hotel in August 2021 for $23. 25 million under the Health through Housing program, which aims to provide assistance to chronically homeless individuals.

Once completed, the facility will offer essential services, including 24/7 staffing, case management, and connections to healthcare and behavioral health services. Community concerns have emerged regarding safety and the potential impact of the program, but officials emphasize that at least 65% of the apartments will be reserved for individuals with established ties to Federal Way. The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle will manage the site, ensuring that qualified residents receive the support they need. Construction is set to begin in February 2025, with a phased occupancy approach allowing residents to move in while work continues. The project aims to foster a sense of community and improve the overall well-being of its residents.

This initiative reflects ongoing efforts in Washington State to combat homelessness through innovative housing solutions.
