South King Fire chief to retire, deputy chief returns to work

South King Fire Chief Dave Van Valkenburg has announced his retirement, effective February 1, 2025, during a board of commissioners meeting on January 8. Van Valkenburg's paid status will continue until January 31, following a period of administrative leave initiated on December 4. Deputy Chief Lisa Defenbaugh, who was also on leave due to an independent investigation, will return to her duties on January 9. Communications officer Brad Chaney confirmed that the reasons behind the leaves were part of separate investigations and reassured the community about the district's commitment to high standards of accountability and transparency. Following a unanimous board vote, Kevin Crossen's position as acting fire chief will continue while the search for an interim chief begins.

The board plans to solicit letters of interest for this interim position. This transition in leadership reflects ongoing changes within the South King Fire organization. The community remains engaged and hopeful for a smooth leadership change.
