King County to Build Animal Shelter at New Site Kent Facility to Close
King County is advancing plans to build a new Regional Animal Services Shelter, as the current Kent facility, constructed over 50 years ago, is no longer adequate for the community's needs. The King County Council has approved a budget of $19. 8 million for this project, which will be financed through the county's general fund and contributions from 24 contract cities that rely on animal care services. Officials are exploring potential sites in the south end of King County, particularly in Kent Valley, but no final location has been confirmed. An external consulting firm assessed the existing shelter and found it lacking in several areas, including undersized spaces, outdated ventilation systems, and inefficient storage solutions, deeming it inadequate for current and future demands.
The timeline for the project is still unclear as the Facilities Management Division seeks a suitable property. This initiative underscores King County's commitment to enhancing animal care and control services in the region, aiming to improve the effectiveness of regional animal welfare efforts.
