Public input sought for Federal Way to Tacoma Dome light rail route

Federal Way, WALocal News

Sound Transit is inviting public feedback on five proposed routes for the Tacoma Dome Link Extension (TDLE), which aims to improve connectivity between Federal Way and the Tacoma Dome. The public comment period is open until February 10, 2025, following the announcement of these options in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This project promises to significantly reduce travel times, enabling a journey from the Tacoma Dome to SeaTac Airport in just 35 minutes. The five alternatives include two routes along Interstate 5 and three along State Route 99, each presenting distinct environmental implications and community impacts. For example, the SF I-5 Alternative minimizes business displacements but poses risks to sensitive cultural resources, while the State Route 99 options involve complex land acquisition challenges and potential traffic disruptions.

The Sound Transit Board will review public comments and finalize the preferred alternative in 2025, with the EIS expected to be completed by 2027. Community leaders, including Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell, are encouraging locals to participate actively in the discussion to influence the project's direction, which will significantly shape the region's transit landscape.
