FWPD receives 150,000 for gun buyback and safe giveaway
The Federal Way Police Department (FWPD) has been granted $150,000 to implement a gun buyback event and a gun safe giveaway, with the funds stemming from a lawsuit against Federal Way Discount Guns for the illegal sale of high-capacity magazines. This funding is part of a larger $2 million initiative announced on December 12 by the Washington State Attorney General's office, aimed at enhancing gun violence prevention efforts across 12 local law enforcement agencies. A King County judge ruled that the gun shop had indeed violated state laws, resulting in a settlement that saw the store agree to pay the state $3 million. FWPD Commander Kyle Buchanan emphasized that the buyback program is a proactive measure to reduce gun violence in the area, referencing a successful similar event held two years prior. The department doesn't inquire about the reasons for gun returns, but many participants report handing in inherited or broken firearms.
Moreover, the funds will also be utilized to purchase gun locking safes, which are critical for preventing unauthorized access to firearms by children and criminals. Buchanan noted that unsecured guns can be stolen and lead to criminal activity, posing a serious risk to community safety. By reinvesting these funds into community safety measures, the FWPD aims to alleviate some financial burdens while improving public safety.
