Edmonds, WA, Mayor Mike Nelson has selected Susan McLaughlin to serve as the new Development Services Director, following an extensive recruitment process that underscored her qualifications and experience. McLaughlin, who holds a Master's degree in Urban Development & Design from the University of New South Wales, has over twenty years of experience specializing in land use, transportation, and public realm design. Her notable achievements include playing a crucial role in the Central City Rebuild Plan in Christchurch, New Zealand, after the catastrophic earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Currently an Urban Design Manager with the City of Seattle's Department of Transportation, she relocated to Edmonds during the pandemic and is eager to contribute to the community's values of environmental stewardship and livability. The recruitment process began with the retirement of the previous Development Services Director, leading to a comprehensive search that yielded 18 applications, of which five met the minimum qualifications.

Following several rounds of interviews, McLaughlin was identified as the leading candidate, with the City Council set to vote on her appointment on October 12, 2021. Her extensive background and commitment to sustainable urban planning make her a promising choice for the position.
