City Providing Small Businesses 1M in COVID-19 Relief
The City of Des Moines has initiated a $1 million relief fund to support approximately 140 small businesses severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding is part of the Small Business Recovery Grant program, which could ultimately total nearly $1. 3 million for local business owners. Economic Development Director Erin Olson-Douglas shared insights into the significant struggles many small businesses are facing, underscoring the city's dedication to helping them recover and thrive. Grants will be distributed in amounts ranging from $3,500 to $10,000, with checks expected to be available within two weeks.
Roughly half of the first-round grantees are minority or women-owned businesses, reflecting a commitment to diversity in economic support. A second round of funding, estimated at $300,000, is also in the works, targeting applicants who initially provided incomplete information. The program highlights the importance of community collaboration, as it includes participation from various regional entities and local corporations. This initiative not only aims to stabilize the local economy but also exemplifies effective public-private partnerships during challenging times.
