Need for Masks, Smaller Outdoor Gatherings Mayor Amends Emergency COVID Proclamation
Mayor Frank Cownie of Des Moines has amended the emergency COVID-19 proclamation to limit outdoor gatherings to 250 people, a response to the alarming rise in coronavirus cases in Polk County, which reported 9,448 positive cases and 201 deaths. The mayor's announcement emphasizes the urgency of wearing face coverings in public settings, particularly when social distancing is not possible. Cownie pointed out that the pandemic remains a significant threat, urging residents to remain disciplined in their efforts to combat the virus. The proclamation outlines specific circumstances under which masks are strongly encouraged, including public transportation and indoor locations. To facilitate compliance, the city will begin distributing face coverings to those in need, aided by volunteers and city staff.
Cownie stated, “Wear a mask – it’s the best way to keep businesses open, reduce the spread of the virus and save lives. ” This proactive measure reflects the city’s commitment to public health and safety. As the situation evolves, the community's cooperation will be essential in navigating the challenges posed by COVID-19.
