City Tackles Storm Cleanup What You Need to Know

Des Moines, IALocal News

In response to the extensive damage caused by an unusual summer thunderstorm in Des Moines on August 11, 2020, the city's Public Works Department has issued updated guidelines for storm debris cleanup. Curbside collection of tree branches, set to begin on August 17, will allow residents to dispose of storm-related debris efficiently, provided they adhere to specific size and placement requirements. Public Works Director Jonathan Gano stated that the cleanup process is expected to take several weeks, highlighting the widespread impact of the storm on local neighborhoods. Residents are encouraged to utilize the Metro Waste Authority's compost program for smaller debris, while the expanded SCRUB event will enable yard waste drop-off from August 12 to August 14 at the MWA Compost Center. The regular SCRUB event scheduled for August 15 will continue with strict guidelines regarding vehicle size and types of debris accepted.

Gano urged residents to be patient and give city crews the necessary space to work effectively. For larger fallen trees, residents are advised to seek assistance from tree service professionals. For further information, residents may contact the Public Works Customer Service Center.
